Cutting Costs and Carbon at 3M
N'compass performs a Data Center Efficiency Study at 3M's St. Paul data centers that identifies $91,000 savings on yearly energy costs
September 1, 2011, Minneapolis, MN - N'compass, a strategic IT firm based in Minneapolis, teamed up with 3M and Xcel Energy to assess the energy impact of 3M's St. Paul data centers. N'compass team members conducted an energy audit on 3M's data centers in accordance with Xcel Energy's Data Center Efficiency Program. This program was created by Xcel Energy to help clients make energy efficiency improvements to new or existing data centers. The program offers rebates designed to help offset the cost of an initial holistic data center efficiency study. Clients are also eligible for additional incentives if they implement efficiency measures the study recommends. In addition, certain efficiency recommendations for technology equipment, computer software or electricity may also qualify for a Minnesota sales tax exemption, starting June 30, 2012, for qualifying data centers. After completing the energy study, N'compass and Xcel Energy provided 3M with energy saving opportunities, which has saved them $91,000 per year on energy costs and avoided 661 tons of CO2 annual emissions. In addition, 3M has reduced its total server count by more than 25 percent by putting 50 to 60 virtual machines on Intel Xeon processor 5640-based servers.
